Traditional v 21st Century language translation methods. Which are you?

This is an interesting story that really makes you think about language acquisition.

A power couple in neuroscience, professors Patricia Kuhl and Andrew Meltzoff were in Hong Kong recently to give a talk on their respective areas of expertise – emotional quotient and intelligence quotient – and the role of each in language acquisition.  http://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/family-education/article/1456247/between-lines-why-bilingualism-childs-play

For me I am left with the feeling that traditional methods are wholly useless, and no matter how long a person tries to learn a language or how much money they spend then they are already setting themselves up for a fall. However people still tell us if we are to communicate across language then we must speak another language. For me I think we just need to simply communicate.

It is difficult to acquire language later in life because the brain loses its elasticity. In terms of learning new languages past the age of seven, Kuhl posits that the “window of learning” stays open longer for children who were exposed to different languages as babies.

I believe that if this research is true then those who have had no exposure to other languages as a child, will struggle as adults and depending on when this influence stopped their wired connections in the brain are already being depleted.

Kuhl found early language skills predict future reading abilities, and skills not developed early are difficult to remediate later on.

This is where I believe EMASUK comes into its own.

European Day of Languages

Thursday will see us celebrating the European Day of Languages. Thirty years ago many of us would only have been aware of a minority of languages depending on what was known around the area where we lived.  To day  throughout the country many of us are communicating with others that also speak Polish as well as our native English and increasingly languages like Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian, Turkish, Hungarian, French and Latvian. This is difficult for those of you in the front line as your Lithuanian may not be anywhere as good as their English even if their English is considered poor.  That is where Clairetalk, Two Can Talk and Talking Tutor come into their own as you can type in English and have it spoken aloud in all of these languages. To speak across languages Two Can Talk is great as they can then type in their language and you can hear it in English.  Brilliant at A and E when decisions need to be made fast and in schools or doctors surgeries where you need more in-depth conversation and also a record of the conversation.

News story – Translation software is breaking down language barriers

For those readers of this blog this story will come as no surprise.  You are already aware of the accessibility you have to languages you do not speak in order to communicate with colleagues, friends, business partners or customers.  This news article suggests that Machine translation is becoming critical to businesses faced with the challenge of providing information to customers, staff and partners in multiple languages and in near real time. We know this is a fact as daily people are asking to use our products to support them with this day to day and face to face situation from hospitals to schools and businesses.

The following comments have been made from this article in computer weekly.

Marcu believes businesses will always need perfect translations that only humans are capable of, but says the core challenge for businesses over the next five to ten years is in using technology to deliver information to customers, staff and partners in multiple languages and in near real time.

And for us at EMASUK this statement is so true. I have long said that if you are the person who has a customer, patient or child in front of you and your languages are not compatible how to do ensure communication? Add to this when it becomes life threatening or an emergency and both parties get very stressed. Using Talking Tutor, Two Can Talk or Claire Talk can support these times until an interpreter can be found supporting both parties and ensuring via communication the correct help is sought.

Jail for Chinese translator in Midlands

What a shocking story. Whilst children aged seventeen and over are charged excessively for tests as well as the range of tests that they now have to undergo just to pass, it is incredibly unfair that this situation had been allowed to happen because of the language barrier.

 

A Chinese translator who helped driving test candidates cheat on theory exams in a ‘serious fraud’ which helped him earn up to £100,000 has been jailed for a year.

There are now tools and resources on the market unlike ten or even five years ago, that the DSA could use to ask questions and with our unique Two Can Talk system you can also have  a two way conversation in the respective languages. This way any driving instructor or tester can ask a question in English and the translator speaks out in for example Mandarin.  The Mandarin candidate can then type in Mandarin and the answer will be said aloud and typed in English for the tester.

Thankfully it was found out but that took the police force and another translator as well as the  time and money to bring these charges all costly to the tax payer.

DSA officials became suspicious at the increased number of prospective drivers choosing to be represented by the 55-year-old interpreter as his client list expanded rapidly towards the end of 2011 and into 2012.

They appointed their own Mandarin language expert to assess audio recordings taken from 27 of his translations and found he repeatedly used the ‘shi’ prompt to steer candidates to the right answer.

Do we trust our EAL TAs too much?

Last week I enjoyed returning to Enfield to meet with previous colleagues and present information about our tools and services. This gave me a unique insight into classroom practice that I had not questioned before i.e. do we trust our EAL TAs too much.

Don’t shout at me too much until you consider this.

Twenty years or so ago  mums came to school and supported their local school by listening to pupils reading. Then some schools had teacher recruitment difficulties, others had budgets to cut and these same people were suddenly give the opportunity to have more responsibility. Some mums were brave and admitted they were not up to this level of academic knowledge or did not have a sufficient skill level re. imparting knowledge. Others with insufficient skills, knowledge or performance levels sometimes kept going until they either failed through some measure put in place to ensure that only those with the appropriate skills and knowledge got through or the head teacher promoted them no more.

This was easily done as there was a common language through which assessment, mentoring and guidance was given. There was also not so much criticism from OFSTED, and governors at that time did not have as much influence over the schools performance .

Today everyone from the pupils to the teachers are monitored, performance managed, mentored, guided or just let go.  We even monitor each other!However one group of people are not specifically targeted probably due to the lack of common language once instruction us given. The group are the EAL TAs even if their English language in every day sentence structure is incorrect we use an excuse generally  along the lines of …well it is their second language. How do we know that in their first language they are any better?

This leads me further to question:
1.How can we check this?
2. As school governors how can you be sure they are doing the best for your pupils?
3. Are children taking longer than others in similar circumstances to learn English because your TA s are needing the instruction first or simply do not have the academic language required to support these pupils?
3. When did you last really look at your TAs performance?

This then leads into how do we cross the language barrier to give our TAs the same support as other TAs and teachers? One solution is Two can Talk which allows the teacher/ senior manager or head  teacher to communicate in their respective first language and pick up the sort of information you need. How can we expect this group of  people to teach the variety of curriculum areas they need on a daily basis without finding the support we need to give them.

Also re CRB checking are we sure that although they may not be registered in the UK if they have not been in the UK long they may be registered in their home country.

What school leaders should consider
1. Why am I leaving this child’s education in the hands of someone who has not been checked or taught to the required academic level  needed to support them across many curriculum areas (consider SEN pupils who need more support and their teachers specialist instruction)
2. Why  am I sending a group of children out from the classroom with an adult that I am unsure what their teaching ability and academic knowledge is but just implicitly trust that they are doing as good a job as I would in their circumstances.
3. How can we as a school improve the children’s chances?
4. Just because a parent or TA speaks a language that we as a school community needs access to it doesn’t mean that this person will be competent across all teaching levels. How can I support them?
5. How can I measure competence of academic instruction?
6. How can I measure pupil performance against TA instruction?
7. How do I create performance management policies for EAL TAs

How do others think? How can we support this unchallenged and unsupported group of people who are told here are 10 children and then just left to get on with it.
